15 Great Nuggets of Advice from My Mom

Growing up, my mom gave me my fair share of advice—cooking, working, spirituality, dating, cleaning, educationyou name it, she had good advice for it. Now that I have my own family, I rely on her advice more than ever. Here is some good advice that my mom has given to me over the years. Some advice I took, and some I had to learn the hard way (like my Little Lord Fauntleroy haircut). Well, here is 15 great nuggets of advice from my mom:
  1. Taking care of your own children is completely different from babysitting other people's children.
  2. When you find the person you are going to marry, you will just know he is the right one.
  3. Don't chop off your long hair all at once.
  4. Don't have a boyfriend in high school because you probably won't marry him. Just have fun and make lots of friends.
  5. You can never have enough food storage.
  6. Kindergartners are a great source of comedyI was able to laugh during some of my most difficult days at college through calling my mom and having her tell me the things her kindergartners said that week.
  7. "Do you really want to dye your hair red? I'm not sure that is a good idea."  (Which ended up turning pink...not one of my best hair moments.)
  8. Cut dryer sheets in half to save money.
  9. Don't throw away your Ziploc bags. Wash and reuse them.
  10. Eat healthy food—There were no Lucky Charms or Coco Puffs for me growing up. Even now, I can never justify buying "junk food" cereal because of the childhood brainwashing.
  11. You can't force people to change.
  12. Always leave a place better than when you found it.
  13. Use applesauce as an oil substitute when baking a cake.
  14. A clean house is a happy house.
  15. Bloom where you are planted.
What is some good advice that you were taught growing up?
